Bird Shelter (Pakhi Ghar)
Chirping Missing? Reboot Urban Biodiversity – One Nest at a Time

Pakhi Ghar: A Creative Initiative to Bring Birds Back to Our Cities
In the hustle and bustle of urban life, we often forget the tiny architects who once filled our skies with song and colour—birds. Their delicate nests, crafted with precision and care, are marvels of natural engineering. But as concrete jungles expand, these feathered friends are disappearing from our cities. Recognizing this, Pathanam—a cutting-edge, cloud-based Knowledge Management System—teamed up with the Architecture Department of Jadavpur University for a heartwarming project called “Pakhi Ghar” (Bird Shelter).
This unique initiative wasn’t just about building nests; it was about reconnecting children with nature, sparking creativity, and fostering environmental responsibility. Over several months, school students across Kolkata and its outskirts participated in workshops, quizzes, and hands-on activities, learning why birds matter and how we can help them thrive.
Why Birds Matter: A Lesson in Coexistence
Birds are more than just pretty creatures—they play a vital role in our ecosystem. They control pests, pollinate plants, and even help in seed dispersal. Yet, rapid urbanization, pollution, and shrinking green spaces have made cities hostile for them. The Pakhi Ghar project aimed to change that by:
- Educating children about different bird species and their nesting habits.
- Encouraging creativity by teaching them to build nests and bird feeders from everyday materials.
- Spreading awareness on how small actions can make a big difference.
- Through engaging videos, interactive quizzes, and hands-on workshops, students discovered the brilliance of bird architecture and why preserving biodiversity is crucial.
How the Project Unfolded: Fun, Learning, and Action
a) Lights, Camera, Feathers! – The Bird Video Series
The journey began with an immersive video series showcasing different birds and their nest-building techniques. From the meticulous weaver bird to the resourceful crow, students were amazed by nature’s ingenuity.
b) Quiz Time – Testing Wings of Knowledge
Next came a lively online quiz designed by Pathanam. Students from over 100 schools participated, answering questions about bird species, habitats, and conservation. The quiz wasn’t just about scores—it was about igniting curiosity.
c) Hands-On Workshops – Crafting Homes for Birds
The most exciting part? Building real bird shelters! Guided by architecture students from Jadavpur University, children learned to create nests and feeders using clay, coconut shells, bamboo, and recycled materials. These workshops weren’t just educational—they were a celebration of creativity and teamwork.
Voices from the Schools: What Students & Teachers Said
The response was overwhelming. Schools like South Point, Gokhale Memorial Girls’ School, Patha Bhavan, and Sri Sri Academy actively participated, with students eagerly embracing the initiative.
Mrs. Dalbir Kaur Chadda, Principal of South Point School, shared:
“A great learning experience for our students to be part of this innovative workshop. An excellent endeavor by Jadavpur University and Pathanam to sensitize young minds.”
A student from National Gems Higher Secondary School excitedly said:
“I never knew birds were such smart builders! Now, I notice nests everywhere and even made one at home!”
The Bigger Picture: Why Such Initiatives Matter for India
1. Environmental Benefits
a) More birds mean healthier ecosystems—they control insects and help plants grow.
b) Urban biodiversity improves, making cities greener and more livable.
c) Reduces plastic waste as students repurpose materials for bird feeders.
2. Educational Impact
a) Makes learning fun—combining science, art, and environmental studies.
b) Encourages empathy towards animals and nature.
c) Develops problem-solving skills as kids design nests and feeders.
3. Long-Term Change
Children who learn to care for nature early grow into responsible, eco-conscious citizens. Projects like Pakhi Ghar plant the seeds for a greener, bird-friendly India.
The Grand Finale: Celebrating Young Conservationists
In March 2023, the project concluded with a special ceremony where the best handmade nests were awarded. But the real reward? Seeing students proudly install their creations in gardens, balconies, and school campuses, knowing they’ve made a difference.
What’s Next? Spreading Wings Across India
The success of Pakhi Ghar proves that small steps can lead to big changes. Imagine if every school in India took up such initiatives—our cities could once again echo with birdsong!
How You Can Help:
1. Build a bird feeder at home using recycled materials.
2. Plant native trees that attract birds.
3. Spread awareness—tell others why birds matter.
Final Thoughts: A Future Where Birds and Cities Coexist
Birds are not just visitors in our world—they are a part of it. The Pakhi Ghar project showed that with a little effort, we can bring them back into our lives. By empowering children with knowledge and creativity, we’re not just saving birds—we’re nurturing a generation that cares for nature.
So, the next time you hear a chirp outside your window, smile. Because somewhere, a child is watching too—and they’re making sure that bird has a home.
Let’s build a greener, bird-friendly India—one nest at a time!
