Angrezi Medium – Lighting the Lamp of Literacy: From Kolkata’s Classrooms to Rural West Bengal’s Heartlands
As the golden hues of autumn approach, a quiet revolution is brewing—one that promises to transform the educational landscape of West Bengal and beyond. This World Literacy Day (September 8th, 2024), we stand at the threshold of a new dawn with Angrezi Medium, an initiative that is not just teaching English but bridging dreams, breaking barriers, and building futures.
Born from the belief that education is the birthright of every child, Angrezi Medium is a heartfelt collaboration between Rotary Club of Calcutta Avyanna, Pathanam (Blended Knowledge Management System), The Education Trust (TET), and a growing family of passionate mentors. What started as a small spark in 2022 has now ignited into a movement—one that is rewriting the story of rural education in India.
The Journey So Far: From 20 Pairs to a Revolution
In 2022, Angrezi Medium began as a bold experiment—could students from Kolkata’s elite schools become torchbearers of change for their rural counterparts? The answer was a resounding YES!
With just 20 mentor-mentee pairs, the first phase proved that compassion knows no boundaries. Urban teenagers, armed with nothing but their textbooks and a desire to make a difference, connected virtually with young learners in remote villages. The results? Smiles of confidence, newfound fluency, and dreams taking flight.
By Phase 2, the family grew to 180+ students, proving that when India’s youth comes together, magic happens.
World Literacy Day 2024: A New Chapter Begins
This September, Angrezi Medium takes its biggest leap yet—150+ new mentor-mentee pairs will join the mission, weaving an even larger tapestry of hope.
But this is not just about numbers. It’s about:
- Empowering rural children with the gift of English—a key that unlocks higher education, jobs, and global opportunities.
- Transforming urban mentors into leaders, empathetic global citizens who understand the power of giving back.
- Creating a ripple effect—because when one child learns, an entire family rises.
What Makes Angrezi Medium Special?
1. Mentorship with a Heart
Our mentors (students from Kolkata’s top schools) don’t just teach—they inspire, encourage, and connect. They’re trained in experiential learning, digital tools, and cross-cultural empathy, making every lesson engaging and impactful.
2. A Curriculum for Real Life
We don’t just focus on grammar—we build confidence in speaking, reading, writing, and digital skills. For many mentees, this is their first step towards a world of possibilities.
3. Breaking Geographical Barriers
With mentors now joining from the USA, Angrezi Medium is becoming a global movement. Imagine a child in a Bengal village learning English from a peer in Kolkata—or even across oceans!
4. Sustainable Change
We’re not here for short-term fixes. By partnering with rural schools, we ensure that the impact lasts for generations.
Join the Movement: Be the Change!
India’s strength lies in its people, and when its youth lead, miracles happen. Angrezi Medium is proof of that.

A Vision for Tomorrow

- A young girl in Sundarbans writing her own stories, dreaming of becoming a journalist.
- A boy from Malda cracking a competitive exam, his family beaming with pride.
This is the future Angrezi Medium is building.
Let’s come together this September—not just to celebrate literacy, but to create it.
One child. One mentor. One lesson at a time.
Join us. Because every Indian deserves the power of words.
